Hi Dave! Yep, had that happen to me just last weekend on my '98 (which I have had 2 years). Small world, huh? First really super day to ride and blam, broken rod! Mine got stuck in neutral on the upshift but was able to get help to kick it into first manually. Got off the road safely & called in a friend to tow it home. Like WD, was able to get a fix without having to buy a new one. Had a friend drill out a bolt, slipped the two threaded ends (one is left-handed) into the hollow shaft & welded them together. Works like a charm. So far, not much riding weather since but it looks far stronger than the original rod and shifts far better. And as far as I know, like Polar Pilot said, I did kick it too hard once and more than likely caused the bend which over time stressed it to the breaking point. I hope you get it fixed & are riding again real soon!
